Wrestling at Oregon State University began in 1909 (then Oregon Agricultural College). By 1924 the program had produced an Olympic gold medalist in Robin Reed and a silver medalist in Chet Newton. The first wrestling coach was Eddie O'Connell (1909 - '10).
The "modern era" began in 1957 with coach Dale Thomas. Coach Thomas built the program through a combination of "fiscal restraint" (cheap!*) and sheer force of personality. Everybody had an opinon about coach Thomas. In his 34 seasons he lead the program to a 616-168-13 record.
Mark Johnson coached two years, 1991 - '92, following Dale's retirement. In 1993 Joe Wells became head coach. Coach Wells lead the team for the next 14 years with 1 Pac-10 title in 1994, four top 10 NCAA finishes and two indivdual national championships.
*One story goes that he re-used mat tape, meet after meet, until it would not stick anymore!
Our intention is to expand the history section with personal stories from former wrestlers, coaches and others associated with the program over the years. Send us your stories!
